Rise Above Bursaries for Single Parents (“Rise Above”) has had its best year yet, thanks to the unwavering support of generous donors. The Winnipeg charity, founded in 2016, has now distributed over $50,000 in bursaries to single parents pursuing a post-secondary education. Five bursaries of $3,500 ($17,500 total) were distributed in 2021 alone.
Anna, one of this year’s recipients, is an eloquent speaker and young mother of three. She has a passion for passing on Indigenous land-based knowledge “I believe it is our responsibility to open up the dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, where we as a community are able to collectively work together for the healing of all nations,” she wrote in her application. Nearing completion of her Indigenous Studies program, she found she didn’t qualify for student loans. Rise Above was able to provide her with a bursary which she will use for tuition and living expenses. Her goal is to become a professor in Indigenous Governance.
To qualify for a Rise Above bursary, recipients must be attending, or applying to attend, an accredited post-secondary institution in Winnipeg; reside within Manitoba; have sole/primary custody of their child(ren); exhibit financial need; and be recognized as a full time student by their institution. Applications are made available in the spring and recipients are selected in August. The number of recipients is determined by donations received and may vary from year to year.
